Print on Demand and ebook publishing

One of the promises of POD publishing was to eliminate the excessive returns of the offset publishing model which involved selling returnable books to bookstores, where most of them were little more than decorations to provide a library-like ambiance for the bestsellers that paid the bills. The majority of self publishers using Lightning Source for POD printing and distribution through Ingram never accepted returns, but I accepted returns for all of my books up until a couple years ago. The picture above shows a box full of stripped copies of the 2004 edition of my title “Print-on-Demand Book Publishing”, which I updated in a 2008. I didn’t see the point of continuing to sell the older books that had come back as returns over the previous years, so I stripped them and wrote them off from my small inventory. I never got around to recycling them, though they’ve migrated to the back…
