POD Publishing Gives Way To eBooks

Print on Demand and ebook publishing

I think it’s fair for self publishers to call the first ten years of the new millennium the decade of print on demand. It was driven by Lightning Source (with most of the sales going through Amazon), although by 2010 and 2011, self publishers were forced into Amazon’s CreateSpace to preserve 24 hour shipping for their titles. But the writing was on the wall for both POD and traditional publishing by 2008, when it became clear that Kindle and reading on small screens was here to stay. For history buffs, in the latter half of the 90′s, Amazon Advantage stocking of printed books was the new frontier for self publishing, so Amazon has been solidly at the center of self publishing economics for over fifteen years.
