There’s a similar solution here for piracy, if you’re prepared to put aside the ethical argument and focus on the bottom line. For years I didn’t really worry about piracy and didn’t bother filing DMCA complaints because Google prioritized my website for people who searched for my books or made relevant queries in the subject areas. When Google turned their search algorithm upside down nearly two years ago so that piracy sites ranked above my own site and Amazon for my book titles and visitors to my sites plummeted by 80%, I could no longer shrug off piracy as a tax on my Internet success since the success had vanished in a puff of cannon smoke. Aaar, my maties.

The Kickstarter solution would be to pre-sell a new edition of my most pirated book for enough money to justify the work. If the project gets funded, any sales beyond the initial…
