There are three interesting data points for the publishing world that I would like to share with you today:
- An estimated 550,000 books were published during 2008.
- An estimated 3,000,000 books were published during 2012.
- It is estimated that 130,000,000 books have ever been published.
To simplify the maths for you, that means 2.3% of the world’s books were published last year, which represents a growth of 545% in just 5 years. From 2006 to 2008 was an estimated growth of 462%.
I’m not sure how much I trust the above numbers, because I do not know how they were calculated. There are simply too many unexplained variables to objectively compare data from different sources. Regardless of potentially flawed methodology, these numbers paint a picture most people in the publishing world can clearly see: the landscape is changing.
